Montalvo Arts Center's Lucas Artists Residency Program is proud to announce its latest jury selections for incoming Artist Fellows. Incoming Fellows were awarded residencies of three months at the LAP’s state-of-the-art facility, which can be taken over the next three years. Some of the selected artists will return to the program multiple times over the course of three years, establishing a connection to place and incubating new work inspired by their residency.
Lucas Artist Fellows are selected through an international nomination/invitational process, with final determination made by a jury of distinguished California arts professionals, including Montalvo curatorial staff, and former Lucas Artist Fellows. This unique selection process helps the LAP identify and support artists who have the potential to become leaders in the next generation of creative thinkers.
Montalvo's Artist Residency program, established in 1939—making it the oldest artists residency program west of the Mississippi, and the third oldest in the United States—is a central part of the organization’s commitment to supporting the arts and an important part of its legacy. “The Lucas Artists Residency Program is the soul of Montalvo,” said Executive Director Angela McConnell. “It is one of the key ways in which we reaffirm our commitment to fostering the creative process, and has gained us international recognition as a model of curatorial practice supporting new and challenging contemporary work.”
