Karen Finley Debuts Unicorn Gratitude Mystery
Last month, Montalvo Visiting Artist Karen Finley debuted Unicorn Gratitude Mystery, an experimental Off-Broadway performance. The show has garnered enthusiastic acclaim from New York critics! Over the past three years, Finley and her creative collaborator Bruce Yonemoto have been engaged as Visiting Artists at Montalvo's Lucas Artists Residency Program. Together at last: Sandow Birk's American Qur'an
American Qur'an is an entirely hand-lettered and illustrated multi-panel manuscript of an English translation of the Holy Qur’an, based on traditional models, but illustrated with scenes from contemporary American life. Painstakingly transcribing over one hundred chapters–or suras–it took artist Sandow Birk more than nine years to complete this monumental work. Read More >> |
Intelligence Starts on a Small Scale
In November and December 2015, the Lucas Artists Program (LAP) hosted a think tank of artists and scientists to consider intelligence from non-anthropocentric perspectives. This think tank, called “Intelligence Moves,” took place at the LAP from November 29-December 12, convened by the SETI Institute Artist-in-Residence Program and Montalvo Arts Center. Read More >> |

Congratulations to former LAP Fellow Miguel Arzabe whose exhibition /*Reject Algorithms*/ was given a rave review in SFgate's Arts & Not Blog by Art critic Kenneth Baker! Baker explains, "During his residency at Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, Arzabe found himself assigned a former dance studio as work space. He took that as a prompting to integrate his work as a painter with the video and performance aspects of his output. We are pleased to announce Montalvo’s contribution to BAN7 was Finding the Center, an installation by LAP Artists-in-Residence Leah Rosenberg and Susan O’Malley, which grew out of work they developed for the Project Space Gallery exhibition Happiness Is... . “It truly is an honor for Montalvo to have been named a BAN7 Partner,” said Kelly Sicat, Director of the Lucas Artists Residency Program. We were excited to hear today that Oakland-based visual artist and graphic designer Renetta Sitoy has been on a documentary for the past few years about a former LAP Artist-in-Residence, Laetitia Sonami. "I hope that this film will contribute to a more nuanced understanding of women working at the intersection of technology and art. This documentary offers an intimate look at one of the most extraordinary, yet under-appreciated electronic sound artists of today, and is structured around an intricate combination of performance and in-studio demonstration," says Sitoy. In Memoriam: The Passing of Lawrence D. "Butch" Morris
We join with other members of the musical community to mourn the death of a legendary composer and musical innovator, Butch Morris. Morris, passed away on Tuesday after a battle with lung cancer. Laurie Rubin in the San Francisco Classical Voice
Earlier this week, mezzo-soprano Laurie Rubin began her tenure as a Montalvo Artist-in-Residence. Just prior to arriving in Saratoga, she made headlines at her performance opening the 10th season of Music at Meyer, the concert series at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco, a program inspired by her recently published memoir: Do you Dream in Color?: Insights from a Girl Without Sight, which details her career as an international opera singer…who happens to be blind. Culinary Artist-in-Residence Niki Ford's Big Move
It’s hard to believe that in a few short weeks, Niki Ford will conclude her term as Montalvo’s 2012 Culinary Artist-in-Residence. Her residency will end on December 31. Though we will be sorry to say goodbye, we wish her well at her exciting new position as Culinary Director at the Healdsburg SHED. LAP Artists Awarded Creative Capital Grants
We are pleased to congratulate two artists, Quintan Ana Wikswo and Dohee Lee, associated with the LAP residency program on a major achievement: they are both among the Creative Capital Grant recipients of 2013. Multidisciplinary artist Quintan Ana Wikswo has been awarded a grant in the area of Emerging Fields for her project problemkinder / Mercy Killing Aktion. Composer/performance artist Dohee Lee will be coming to the LAP residency in the summer of 2013. She has been awarded a grant in the area of Performing Arts to continue work on her piece The Mago Project. Read More >> |
