I decided I wanted to open up the foreground space around the evergreen tree and restore some of the old expansive views of the valley below. I was also interested in restoring a physical relationship between this site and the rest of Silicon Valley–an area that has transformed dramatically over the past one hundred years or so, and particularly more recently as the tech industry has made its home here. I wanted to draw attention to such historical shifts because I hoped my work could suggest our current moment in time and place in relation to such globally impactful enterprises as Apple. With its headquarters just a few miles due north from the Belvedere Temple, it’s hard for me not to think about my own relationship to Apple going back to 1984 when I began learning how to write code to produce pixellated images during grade school. Oddly enough, the first image I created was a landscape with mountain views running through it, not so unlike aspects of Montalvo. So, my interest in overlapping layers of history began to form as I thought more about this longer view in proximity to the evergreen tree.
